Free Computer Center Opens
As personal computers and computer technology are becoming
increasingly important in our everyday lives, Kent State
Tuscarawas is providing a new community service to make
computer access and related technologies available to people
who otherwise may not have the opportunity to use or learn
them.
Participants do not have to be Kent students to use
this facility. Beginning March 3, 2003, the Community Training
Center (CTC) located in the brand new Science and Advanced
Technology Center will open to the general public. The hours
of operation will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m.
and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-8 p.m. Participants will
have
twenty state-of-the-art computer stations available for learning
computer technologies and skills at their own pace and in
the same way those who have computers in their homes do.
The ability to explore the Internet, e-mail friends or relatives,
travel the world of tutorials, learn word processing and
become comfortable around the newest technologies will be
available. Participants will improve education levels and
gain job related skills while developing the discovery mentality
needed to navigate the world of computers.
Volunteer assistants will be on hand to aid in getting started
and answer questions. A projected series of workshops will
begin with “Computers
Without Fear”, six weeks of two-hour sessions beginning
Monday March 10th from 7-9 p.m. Experienced volunteer instructor
Ed Rowlance will help those enrolled acquire basic skills
and gain self-confidence.
The opening of the Center is coming
at a time when universities nationwide are becoming more
engaged in economic development in communities surrounding
their campuses. The Community Training Center at Kent State
Tuscarawas is working to afford everyone in the community
the opportunity to gain access to computer technology for
life-long learning and personal and community empowerment.
